About Widecombe in the Moor

The moor is Dartmoor, where this village made famous by the words of the traditional "Widecombe Fair" song, lies tucked neatly away in a hollow. It is a peaceful location, with beautiful views of woodland, moor and granite tors, showing little of the gloom often associated with Dartmoor.

St.Pancras is the local village church, this occupies a picturesque setting behind a low stone wall, it has a sturdy clock-face tower graced with intricate pinnacles. Inside the church visitors may see a host of historic church treasures, these include the remains of a rood screen, with painted figure panels. The church dates from the 14th-century and is certainly the most enduring feature of the village. Huddled around the church grounds are typical Dartmoor properties, whilst in the churchyard are graves from several centuries. St.Pancras has long been known as the "Cathedral of the Moors" this is due to it being a large church which can be viewed from miles around.

The village has some interesting architecture and modern visitor attractions, its streets and narrow lanes are crammed with gift shops, graft shops and galleries. These are almost impassable during the summer months, especially in September when the annual fair is held.

Widecombe has become a year round destination, its lovely valley location, moors and wildlife draw visitors at every season. The rural countryside around here is equally beautiful at any time of year with each season bringing its own special vista's; Snow covered fields in winter, dancing Snowdrops and young lambs in Spring, clear blue skies of summer, and in the fall rich russet leaves crunching beneath your feet.

Here there really is a kind of magic, if you give full reign to your imagination you can almost see Old Uncle Tom Cobley with his friends making their way to the fair.
